EHS Rules and Guidelines

This handbook and the district's Back To School handbook contain EHS's rules and regulations. Each student receives a copy of each book at registration and/or the first day of school and is responsible for their entire contents. Failure to read these booklets is an unacceptable reason for not following the rules.

 If you have any questions, please discuss them with your principal, assistant principal, teacher, parent, or counselor. All rules and regulations are subject to change. Students and parent/guardians will be notified of any changes.

It is the student's responsibility to obtain assignments when they are absent from school as they are not excused from work completed by the class while absent. Students are encouraged to obtain assignments from classmates or online if they miss a class. Students who are to be absent from school for 3 or more days may request assignments through the guidance secretary. The teachers should be given at least 24 hours to prepare assignments. Teachers will permit students to make up work missed during an absence as long as a student makes appropriate arrangements with the teacher no later than the student's 5th day back at school.

To see a counselor during class, a student needs a note from their teacher. If a counselor is not immediately available, the guidance secretary allows the student to leave a note and then sends the student back to class.


The media center is open from 7:50 - 3:40 Monday through Friday. Students may use the media center for reading, quiet study, homework, research, or teacher-assigned projects.

Students will be admitted when they present a pass signed by the classroom teacher stating the type of work to be accomplished while in the media center. No passes are required before or after school.

Students must present their own school ID to check out an item. A maximum of three items may be checked out. Books are checked out for ten (10) school days and may be renewed if the student is clear of fines or overdue materials. Overdue charges (per school day) are 10 cents for books and 25 cents for reference or reserved materials, with maximum fines not to exceed $5.00. Students are responsible for lost or damaged books and are charged the price of the book plus processing fees for lost books.

Any student who is leaving school permanently for any reason must check with a counselor. An official withdrawal form will be provided. All books must be returned and debts paid.


The student's "right to learn" will be protected. Interfering with this "right" will result in referral to an assistant principal as a last resort. The teacher will have exhausted all appropriate preventive and corrective measures.

Disciplinary actions may be one or a combination of the following: 1) parent conference, 2) teacher assigned detention, 3) administrative detention, 4) in-school suspension, 5) out-of-school suspension, 6) district behavioral contract, 7) Youth Court for Pickens County, 8) recommendation for expulsion; and 9) referral to law enforcement officials.

A student assigned detention for violation of school rules is provided a "DETENTION NOTICE" by a teacher or administrator that states the date, time, and place when the student is to serve detention. Students will be required to study or work during detention. Students are not allowed to talk, listen to or use electronic devices during detention.

Any student who cannot attend an assigned detention must provide a valid written excuse from the parent requesting a postponement. It is the responsibility of a student absent the day of an assigned detention to make arrangements for a make-up date.

FAILURE TO SERVE A DETENTION ASSIGNED BY A TEACHER OR ADMINISTRATOR WITHOUT A VALID WRITTEN EXCUSE FROM THE PARENT WILL RESULT IN FURTHER DISCIPLINARY ACTION. Teachers will notify parents when their efforts to correct a child's behavior are not producing the desired results.

Students assigned ISS must report to ISS when assigned. Bring materials needed for classes. If you have morning career center, report immediately to ISS at 11:25. You will have lunch at a time designated by the ISS instructor. Failure to do so will involve additional discipline.

Students found in the halls more than five (5) minutes after the tardy bell without a pass will be escorted to ISS.

ISS assignments void late arrival or early dismissals.

Students who are suspended or expelled may not participate in or attend any school functions or activities on or off campus during the time of the suspension or the expulsion. This includes the prom, athletic events, and special programs at the school. Suspended or expelled students on school property during the time of their suspension or expulsion, without permission of an administrator, will be considered trespassing and subject to prosecution.

Detention is assigned in place of out-of-school suspension when appropriate so the student will not miss valuable class time. Students are expected to bring materials and supplies to do school-related work. Detention is held after school from 3:10 - 4:40 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students must report on time. Students will not be allowed to eat, use cell phones or talk during detention. Disruptive students or students who refuse to cooperate may be sent home by the supervising teacher and receive additional disciplinary action.

Students should not be on school property prior to the established time for adult supervision or after the time for adult supervision to end in the afternoon unless under the direct supervision of a teacher or coach. The times and locations for adult supervision are 30 minutes prior to school in the cafeteria, 30 minutes after school in the bus area, and 15 minutes before or after school in the car area and student parking lot. The SDPC assumes no responsibility for the supervision of or protection for students who either arrive at school prior to the time when adult supervision is provided in the morning, who remain on campus in the afternoon after the time when adult supervision ends, or who gather in an unsupervised area. Loitering on campus before or after school hours and on non-school days is prohibited. Students on campus are required to adhere to SDPC and EHS school policies at all times. By 3:20 students should be out of the school building unless under the direct supervision of a faculty member of coach. By 3:25 only bus riders should be in the bus area.

Student parking is a privilege open to eligible students who are licensed and responsible drivers who have completed Alive at 25 training with seniors receiving first priority. Student parking permits cost $25. Students are not permitted to park in areas on campus that are not designated for student parking. Vehicles in such locations are subject to being towed. The school district does not assume responsibility for damage to cars, for the theft of cars, or for articles taken from cars.
To drive and park a vehicle on the campus at EHS is a privilege. Students are subject to school fines, revocation of driving privileges, and in some instances, city traffic tickets. Consequences depend upon the severity of the offense. At no time during the school day are students allowed to go to their cars or sit in cars without an administrator's permission. Parking lot rules and violations can be found on the copy of the parking contract provided at time of purchase.


Paging devices are defined as any telecommunications device (including cellular telephones, camera phones, pagers, etc.) that emits an audible signal, vibrates, displays a message, a picture or otherwise summons or delivers a communication to the possessor.

  • Operating (i.e., turned "on") paging devices ARE NOT ALLOWED in school buildings or on school campuses beginning at 7:30 a.m. on an academic school day. During this time, paging devices are to be turned "off" and stored, out of sight, in pockets, bags, backpacks, etc.

  • Operating (i.e., turned "on") paging devices ARE NOT ALLOWED en route to and from school on school buses. While on a school bus, a student's paging device is to be turned "off" and stored, out of sight, in pockets, bags, backpacks, etc.

  • Operating (i.e., turned "on") paging devices ARE ALLOWED on school campuses or in school buildings prior to 7:30 a.m. on an academic school day and in school buildings and on the school campus after the academic school day has ended (3:10 p.m. for middle school and 3:15 p.m. for high schools, unless the day is extended due to school bus schedules) and days when schools are not in session.

The school principal or his/her designee shall have the authority to limit the use and/or confiscate paging devices if the use or possession of these devices is causing a disruption to the school and/or event.

A student who is in violation of this policy is subject to the following penalties:

First offense – confiscation of the device; and, after a conference with the parent/legal guardian, the device will be returned to the adult.

Second offense - confiscation of the device; and, after a conference with the parent/legal guardian, the device will be returned to the adult after 14 calendar days.

Third offense - confiscation of the device; and, after a conference with the parent/legal guardian, the device will be returned after 60 calendar days.

Fourth and subsequent offenses - confiscation of the device and the device will be returned at the conclusion of the current academic year.

The principal or her/his designee may assign additional disciplinary consequences, if the principal/designee determines that the circumstances of a particular incident warrant such an action.

School personnel and/or the school district are not responsible for the loss or damage of any paging device brought onto school property. In addition, the school district will not be responsible for the condition of any confiscated device upon its return to the owner.

Violations of this policy will result in confiscation of the device and all of its components. Students are not allowed to remove the battery, SIM card, or any other part of the device before giving the device to the school official.

SDPC-issued electronic devices are to be used for educational purposes and are continuously monitored.  Students may not download any software, change settings on computers, tamper with the network settings, deface equipment, or print material deemed inappropriate. Students may not access email or instant message or visit chat rooms. Students may not play games on the computers. Students may not download software or music to personal listening or gaming devices. Students may not surf the Internet.

Penalties for computer misuse range from detention to withdrawal of computer privileges to suspension/expulsion, depending upon the offense. Students who abuse computer privileges in a computer-related course may be withdrawn from the course with a withdrawal failure (WF).


The Green and White yearbook is the only official publication of the school. The principal or assistant principal must approve all other printed material before distribution.


Moderation and modesty should govern student dress. Clothing, accessories, or hair should not be so extreme or inappropriate to the school setting as to disrupt the educational process. Therefore, students will follow these rules in middle and high school programs

  1. Provocative and suggestive clothing is not permitted (tight fitting, plunging necklines, etc.)

  2. Garments worn on the legs (pants, shorts, skirts, dresses, etc.) must have a length that comes to within one inch of the top of the knee with no holes or slits above this line. No sagging, baggy pants are permitted.

  3. Bare midriffs will not be permitted. The standard used will be that no midriff is visible when the student is engaged in normal movement such as walking, sitting down, standing up, etc.

  4. Any sleeveless garment must have width on the shoulder area of at least four of the student's fingers, and the arm opening should fit the body closely enough to cover the underarm and the side of the chest areas.

  5. Mesh or see-through garments are permitted only if a legal garment is visible underneath.

  6. Underwear should not be seen at any time.

  7. Sleepwear is forbidden. This includes bedroom slippers.

  8. Shoes or sandals must be worn. Flip flops (shower type shoes with soft bottoms) are forbidden.

  9. Headwear (hats, sunglasses, do-rags, skullies, head bands, bandannas, etc.) is not permitted to be worn inside the building. [Headwear worn inside will be confiscated.]

  10. Hair rollers are not permitted.

  11. Face painting is not permitted.

  12. No clothing, accessory, or tattoo that displays inappropriate language or images (profanity, sexual suggestion/insinuation, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, ethnic slurs, slogans/symbols that may lead to disorder, etc.) are permitted.

  13. Chains or other articles hanging from clothing are not permitted, as well as items that have potential to cause harm to one's self or to others.

  14. Gang affiliation - attire, colors, tattoos or symbols are not permitted.

A principal may make an exception to these rules for medical or religious situations or for school spirit or curriculum activities. A principal has the authority to judge a student dress situation not specifically listed in this administrative rule as a violation if the situation has potential to disrupt the education process or environment. Any student found not in compliance will be subject to the following consequences.

First Offense
The student will have to correct the violation before being given permission to return to class. [A student unable to correct the violation will report to ISS for the rest of the school day.] The student will be given a formal warning that will be documented in the student's discipline record (not the permanent record).

Second and Subsequent Offenses
The student will have to correct the violation before being given permission to return to class. The student will be considered disobedient and an appropriate disciplinary consequence will be assigned based on the context of this situation in the student's discipline record for the year.

A first offense for drug use shall result in a suspension from school for up to 10 school days. A second offense shall result in an administrative recommendation to the district board of trustees that the student be expelled from school for the remainder of the school year.
A first offense for drug sale and/or distribution shall result in an administrative recommendation to the district board of trustees that the student be expelled from school for the remainder of the school year.

With the exception of water, no food or beverage is permitted in the buildings except in the cafeteria. No food or beverages (including water) is allowed in the auditorium. Outside food, including fast food, may not be delivered to or brought onto campus.

Harassment of others is not tolerated at EHS. Anyone who feels that he or she has been the victim of harassment is encouraged to report the matter to a school administrator or teacher. All allegations will be promptly investigated and addressed. Please refer to your Back 2 School handbook for policy JCDAB on Harassment, Intimidation or Bullying issued December, 2006, for additional information.


Students need to have their ID cards in their possession while at school. Students need to product their ID card in the Media Center to check out books and in the Cafeteria in order to purchase food. Additional ID's are available for purchase, if needed. Students may not purchase items from the Cafeteria or canteen without an EHS ID or temporary ID.


Students ID cards that are in the Chromebook cases need to remain in the Chromebook cases at all times.

All students are expected to follow the requests and instructions of the faculty and staff members at all times. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action.

The School Resource Officer (SRO) is a state certified law enforcement officer and is employed with the City of Easley Police Department. The SRO or other designated police officer will be responsible for incidents related to law enforcement such as traffic, drug/weapon violations and any other state and local laws. Each student will be responsible for their conduct and will be subject to all state and local laws.


If a student or faculty member is threatened or attacked, he may need to use reasonable force to defend himself but not in excess of the amount necessary to prevent the attack.

A student must be careful not to become the aggressor in a situation where another person initiates the wrongful conduct. In this situation, if the student overreacts to the initial provocation, he then becomes the aggressor and will subsequently be liable for disciplinary action that may include referral to law enforcement officials, despite the fact that he was attacked first. If a student chooses to fight when he has an opportunity to avoid or walk away from the fight, he is liable for disciplinary action.


Public affection is in poor taste. Students should refrain from kissing, embracing, and similar behavior on school property, including parking lots. Chronic violations will result in disciplinary action.


The safety of students, staff members, and visitors to our facilities is a top priority in the SDPC and at EHS. Please report any information you have regarding a safety-related issue to a school administrator or teacher as soon as possible.


Due to the disturbance and distraction created, use of all sound producing equipment, such as radios, iPods, Zunes, MP3 players, etc. is prohibited in the school building during school hours. If used in the building, they can be confiscated and returned at the discretion of an administrator. Headphones or ear buds are required for use of sound producing equipment outside and must be removed before entering the building.


Students are expected to be on time to school and to all classes. A student is tardy if not in class when the bell rings. Students tardy to class will initiate discipline process.  Further disciplinary action will result with multiple tardies. A student with a note from a teacher or administrator is counted as excused tardy. Students are subject to additional disciplinary action if more than 5 minutes tardy to class without a note from a teacher or administrator. Students who miss fifty percent or more of class are considered absent from class. Failure to serve consequences as assigned results in further disciplinary action. In the event of a late bus, please see the Sign In/Sign Out Policy.

Students are expected to follow their official schedule and to report to each class in a direct and timely manner. Off-limits areas are considered to be any area that a student is not assigned to or does not have specific permission from an EHS teacher or administrator to be in. A student must have written permission from an administrator to go to the parking lots during the school day. Students in unauthorized and off-limits areas are subject to disciplinary action.


Possession of a weapon on school premises will subject the student to disciplinary action to include expulsion for one full calendar year (365 days) and in some instances permanent expulsion.


Students must give the school, within three days of absence, a written excuse from a parent/guardian or health practitioner involved in the student's care for all absences. A valid excuse must be dated and list the student name, grade, date of absence(s), time of absence (ex: 1st period), the reason for absence(s), telephone number, and signature of the parent/guardian. Excused absences include student health concerns excused by parent or licensed/certified health practitioner involved in the student's care; serious family health concern or death in the family; parental approved, pre-arranged, non-school sponsored trips or activities including recognized religious holidays (pre-arranged absences must be approved by the school principal.) Students must attend 85 days in a year course or 42 days in a semester course before receiving consideration for credit and/or promotion. Students who are absent in excess of five days in a year course or three days in a semester course may be required to present a written excuse from a licensed/certified health practitioner involved in the student's care to receive an excused absence. Students with excessive unlawful absences will be required to make up absences in "Seat Time." Students making up Seat Time will lose privileges such as late arrivals and early dismissals. Students who do not make up their Seat Time prior to extra-curricular events, for example, Prom, run the risk of losing access to the event. This policy is in alignment with guidelines provided by South Carolina school attendance law.

The cafeteria is operated for the students, faculty, and staff at EHS. An EHS ID card is required to purchase meals or food items. Students who arrive late to first period class may not order breakfast in the classroom. Students are encouraged to participate in the school lunch program and place money in their account prior to the opening of school. Seniors and afternoon career center students are allowed to go to the front of the lunch line. Trays and dishes are to be returned to the proper place after use. The tables and floor are to be left in a clean condition. Chairs are to be properly placed at the table when a student has finished eating. Line breaking will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action.

Students are not allowed to charge breakfast, lunch, or additional food items to their account or anyone else's account. Charging on someone else's account will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action. In an emergency, a student may ask the Food Service Manager, before the purchase of the breakfast or lunch meal, if the student may charge. If a student needs to charge at breakfast, the student must go by the cafeteria to ask permission prior to the beginning of school. In any situation, no more than one breakfast and/or lunch may be charged. No additional food items may ever be charged.
Free and reduced lunch forms are distributed to each student at the beginning of the school year. A student may apply for free or reduced lunch at any time during the school year. Forms are available from Guidance or the Lunchroom Supervisor.


At the end of the school year, a student who owes the school a financial debt may have his/her records retained and/or credit for a course withheld until the debt is paid. This policy also applies to any student who has failed to complete any assigned detention. Students who owe debts may not participate in extra-curricular activities (ex: field trips, graduation, prom.)

Students who are less than 15 minutes tardy to school should report directly to first period class. Any student who arrives 15 minutes or more tardy must report to the attendance office for an admittance slip. Students who fail to check in at the attendance office for late arrival will be subject to disciplinary action.

All students must sign out in the main office. Students are not to leave school grounds during the school day without first getting permission from the attendance office or school nurse.
The following items apply to early dismissals/late arrivals:

  1. Students who need to leave school early are to present a note, signed by the parent, to the secretary in the main office upon arriving at school. Do not wait until departure time. The note must state the date and time the student is to leave school along with the reason and a telephone number where the parent can be reached. All notes will be verified before the student will be allowed to sign out. The student will report to the office and check with the secretary at the requested time for dismissal. Students who have early dismissal should leave the campus immediately. False or forged requests for early dismissal will result in disciplinary action.

  2. The office will classify the excuse as excused, unexcused, or medical based on South Carolina state attendance law.

  3. Students who become ill during the day must report to the school nurse.

  4. All students who return to school from an early dismissal will "sign in" at the main office.

  5. Students who return to school for after school activities should not return to campus before 3:10 p.m. and should park in appropriate areas.

  6. Students are to obtain notification from either guidance or an administrator before assuming they have received a schedule change of a permanent Early Dismissal or Late Arrival. Students who do not follow appropriate procedures for schedule changes for permanent Early Dismissals or Late Arrivals are subject to disciplinary action.

  7. Easley High School has a closed campus for lunch. Students do not have permission to exit campus for lunch.

  8. Except in cases of emergency, students will not be signed out after 2:45 p.m.

At the sound of the fire alarm students are expected to quietly leave the classroom and assemble with their teacher in the designated outside area. Students should be familiar with the exit routes in each of their classrooms.
Fire alarms are placed in the building for the safety and welfare of all students. Fire alarms are to be used on an emergency basis only. Any student found intentionally setting off an alarm without proper reason would be subject to a 10-day suspension from school as well as being reported to the police.


It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to inform the school nurse of any changes in the health status of the student.

Student medications must be turned into the school nurse at the beginning of the school day.

If a student is ill, they are to report to the health room to be assessed by the school nurse. The school nurse will make the appropriate assessment and, if needed, contact a parent/guardian regarding dismissal from the health room. The school nurse must take into consideration the guidelines provided by South Carolina regarding school attendance law.

The health room will be closed at 2:30pm each day except for emergency situations.


Telephone messages of an emergency nature for students will be accepted from parents only. An effort will be made to contact the student. Students and parents are advised to make arrangements before coming to school for early dismissals, after-school pick-up, work schedules, etc. Students will be called at the end of class to obtain items such as book bags, gym bags, projects, lunch money, etc., when delivered by parents/guardians to avoid disrupting classroom instruction.


Students are not allowed to receive deliveries of flowers, balloons, etc., at school.


No student may have any over-the-counter or prescription medication in his/her possession while on school grounds or at a school-sponsored function without prior permission from the principal or his/her designee.


Students are permitted to use office phones in an emergency. Please understand the tying up of school phone lines for social purposes is inappropriate and cannot be allowed.


Students must be present in school and meet all eligibility requirements, including discipline and attendance, in order to participate in extra-curricular activities and athletics. Participation in student activities/athletics is conditioned on the student's behavior reflecting positively on the school. The administration reserves the right to deny any student from participating in an extra-curricular activity.

Eligibility to participate in an elective field trip will be based on the following: 1) attendance, 2) discipline, and 3) grades. The administration of EHS reserves the right to deny a student permission to participate in an elective field trip regardless of money paid or commitments made.

Only students classified as a junior or senior actively enrolled as a student at EHS may purchase prom tickets. The number of tickets per student is limited to two (2). The names of all EHS students attending the Prom must be provided at time of ticket purchase and each student must be cleared of Seat Time and be free of delinquencies. Tickets may not be purchased for dates who dropped out of school during this school year, who are expelled, or who are not in current good standing. All dates not enrolled at EHS must be preapproved by the EHS administration. It is the responsibility of the junior or senior to clear any questions regarding a date with the administration prior to purchasing tickets.
