To recognize high achievement in Spanish by students of secondary
schools and to promote a continuity of interest in Spanish/Hispanic Studies.
Qualifications for Chapter Membership:
To be eligible for induction,
students must have completed at least four semesters of Spanish. During these four
semesters, inductees must have attained an overall grade point average of 3.0 and a
Spanish grade point average of 3.6 (on a 4-point scale), and participated actively in
service, academic and public relations activities.
In March, the sponsor will select eligible students to become a member of the
national Spanish Honor Society. The initiation ceremony will take place in May.
Special Awards and Contests:
1. Senior Scholarship
Forty-four college Scholarships (eight at $2,000.00 and thirty-six at $1,000.00
nationwide) are warded to graduating senior class members enrolled in Spanish
classes. Each chapter sponsor can submit one senior scholarship application.
Applications are available in January.
2. Travel Scholarships
are available to junior class members of SHH. Information and applications are
available in January from the chapter sponsor. Each award covers the total
amount of travel expenses from student's home, hotel stay, and most meals. All
trips are chaperoned by teachers. Only one student per chapter may apply.
3. Award of Excellence (PREMIO DE HONOR)
will be presented to the best graduating senior member of SHH.
